Can you help me? Interior Design essay help?
I finished school at GCSE level and I got away with 7 A*-C grades. However, I didn't go to college for very personal reasons and I am currently doing a Foundation Diploma ASET Interior Design through distance learning. The problem is, how do I write an essay to their standard? I need to write an essay describing a certain Design style including upholstery, flooring, etc...and at the moment I'm really stuck, I really don't know how to begin. I tried writing it in the form of how I find it in magazines, but I still think it's not good enough...please I really need some help. 10 Points available!
You need to use a variety of sources for your essay and reference these carefully. You need to show evidence of having looked at standard works on the subject - there are lots of books out there (also check the course reading list). Magazines and journals are useful but you should not limit yourself to these. Ditto websites which can be a bit variable in quality.
I would be tempted to focus on something like Art Nouveau - it is a relatively short period with relatively few designers (Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald). The furnishings they produced were interesting - high on style, low on quality. They designed everything including floor coverings stenciled decoration and fabrics (mainly applique work). Other people/styles might be Syrie Maugham and the All White Room - her King's Road flat which launched a whole generation of 1920's Jazz Modern minimalism. Or John fowler ad the English Country House Look exemplified by Colefax and Fowler in pre (and post) war Britain.
The problem with distance learning (I did this) was the availability of a good library - I was lucky as I had access to some of the best - but you may well find all you need in your local main public library for this kind of topic.
