How do I tan a hide with tannic acid?
I found a dead racoon and want to tan it but all the ways I've looked up so far seem so hard. I know there is a way to tan hides with tannic acid but it seems I can't find it. Please offer some help. Also post any ways to tan hides. I want to get as much knowledge as possible about this subject.
Best way to start.
case skin it.... (peel all skin off down to the nose).
use care along the tail.
turn inside out scrape or flesh all fat from hide a draw knife works well for this. stretch hide over a tapered board to give a flat surface to work from.
stretch hide over wire form and dry ( wire form looks kind of like a rocket... tapered)
not too sure about the next steps but my best guess is
wash the hide in borox
then you can tan it.
I think you can get a tanning kit from Cabela's..(online)
Best I can do I sent mine out.
Contact you local fur trappers asso.
Caution you may have to have a tag from the DEP or a hunting lic.
