Difference in cow hide and leather motorcycle coats?
I'm lookin for a warm coat to ride a motorcycle, I get cold easy.
Don't be fooled, loosely, any animal skin that has been dehaired/wooled etc and tanned could be called leather. The source animal and tanning process will affect the durability of the leather.
Leather clothing is typically made from goat, pig, buffalo, cow etc.
The process is further complicated by the area on the skin the leather is taken. Belly skin is softer thinner and not as tough oas the rump, and so it goes.
Then to get a uniform thickness of leather through the garment, quality items are made from graded leather, so you get a lot of wastage with each hide. This called full grain leather.
Cheap stuff uses a method that basically grinds the hide down till it is the same thickness, this can seriously affect the durability of the leather.
Quality motorcycle leathers are made from full grain hide, usually cow, that has been hand selected and graded, it costs a whole lot more than the cheaper stuff.
You get what you pay for in this world.
