Can sheets of stainless steel be punched out like tin is?
If I wanted to do a punched tin design, could stainless steel be used or not?
It could be done, but it will take a lot more force and be much more expensive, too. Even though stainless steel is a lot stronger, if you could find it in sheets that are as thin as the tin commonly used for things like pie chests, it would certainly be possible to create a design in it. You'll just need a bigger hammer, literally. You won't need an industrial press, though you might find yourself using a drill rather than a punch like you would for tin. A little experimentation may be in order, but I think it is possible, though it might be a lot of work.
If you're looking for the rust resistance that stainless provides, consider aluminum, which is obviously much softer than even tin and develops a film when exposed to air that resists corrosion. It'll even be cheaper than stainless, while being very light weight. But you should also try to see how you like working with stainless steel as it might be worth the expense and difference in workability over tin.
