Broken Faucet (water pressure is fine)?

The kitchen faucet in my house has been slowing down to a trickle over the last few days. We have a faucet that you lift up to turn on, and swivel to the left and right in a ball joint motion to use. The water pressure seems to be fine, it is not leaking from the bottom. We also have a sprayer that is functioning just fine, with no lack of pressure. I have also noticed that when you lift the faucet handle a little higher then it should go, water comes gushing out of the crevices. It leads me to think the faucet itself has a clog, but I am a girl in college living on my own and know nothing about plumbing. If anybody has any idea how to repair this without calling a plumber for an expensive solution please let me know!

I think rusty most likely got it right for you, but there are a couple of other possibilities you might want to check. It could be that your faucet screen/filter is clogged with bits of rust or some such materials that came loose from the pipes, especially if you have the older galvanized water pipes. You can check this by unscrewing the screen from the tip of the faucet and cleaning it if necessary.

It is also possible that some of that material may have lodged in the faucet cartridge. You can shut the water supply off and check this easily enough. You will need some basic tools--or a friend with same.

As noted, though, rusty's answer is the more likely one, but if you can solve the problem the easy and cheaper way, that ought to help.
