What did the first Native American Breastplates look like?
I have put together several hair pipe breast plates and am interested in putting together older forms (if they existed) such as using ribs from deer or other animals. Does anyone know of the earliest type of Native American breastplates are?
The first hair bone pipes were invented in the 1880's. Shortly there after followed the breastplates and other decorations made of these bone beads. There were no earlier forms. I will tell you the history of them since this info is really ore of a historical context then anything else. You will see when you read this you will realize your idea is made up not old. To learn how to make an original one you should ask your elders. If you are not Native then you have no business making one.
There was an Ojibway trader. Back in those days you needed to have permission from the Indian agent to leave your rez, so only some were traders. This Ojibway trader traded with many Nations in the plains area. One day he returned to one of the rez's and they told him they wanted lotsa stems from the corn cob pipes he had traded them. They brought out the jewelry and accessories they had made from the stems of these pipes. Intrigued the Ojibway trader speaks to his supplier and explains how he needs lotsa bone pipe beads for trade. The supplier agrees it could be a popular item and gets em made. They become very popular on the plains up North to the land of the Blackfoot who are not to interested and east to the land of the Ojibway who also are not to interested although some are. In the next ten years they become very popular. By the 1940's they are falling out of popularity but some on the powwow trail still have the originals and wear these. They become popular again in the 70's with the resurgence of cultural pride.
