What is this rodent I saw at a mine?
I was exploring an abandoned mine with my family and we noticed a few pack rat nests and on our way out we saw him or her but it was larger than I'd expect a pack rat to be, it was grey and reminded me of a chinchilla, it also had a very fluffy tail. I went home to see if i could find what it was and I found a bushy-tailed wood rat, but the one I saw seemed bigger and a fluffier tail. if you think you know what it is let me know even if it IS the bushy-tailed wood rat. You need to find person who is an expert on rats, or pick up a field guide. If you are interested in rats, you might want to watch a special by the Discovery channel called "Ratzilla". If you watch that show, you will find the name of some biology professors who are knowledgable about rats whom you could contact. How large was the rat? According to the Discovery special, there's a recently spotted species of wild rat that is much larger than the Norwegian rat, but I doubt that it's what you saw. This particular species of rat is quite large and it has a fluffy tail.
Rats are becoming a big problem and they must be contained at all costs. One rat can produce hundreds of baby rats over a lifetime. If you ever go back out to that abandoned mine, make sure and set some traps. They will disrupt wildlife populations and destroy crops.
