Is this behavior of a coyote?
One of my sheep was killed the other day. Because we discovered her at one in the morn, we had to leave her. That night, what ever it was came back and ate everything but her shoulders up, she was almost completely gone. And it tried to drag her through the fence. The animal was unsuccessful getting the sheep through the fence, and it defecated all around the carcass and even inside (sorry for that image). Is this typical of a coyote? I know this is usually to mark the carcass as "it's mine" so they can come back later. I also found a foot print that was about 2 inches across, maybe a little less. I know there is really no for sure way without hard evidence to know what it was, but is the defecation in and around the carcass typical of a coyote? I cant find any info on it. Oh, I am in FL.
The defecation is a definite sign of dog activity. It might be a combination of two predators. Florida does have coyotes, but they also have a lot of fox (which is not capable of killing a sheep, but will scavenge). However if you live in the southern florida there is a slight chance it was a mountain lion. They originally lived around the everglades but were almost wiped out. But they were re-introduced in a few areas. Best way to tell is to try to remember how the sheep was killed. If it looked like its neck was broken and had bite marks around the back of the head,it was a mountain lion. But if it seemed like random attacks it was most likely a coyote. Furthermore, an adult coyote's track is about 2 inches wide by about 2.5 inches wide. Or it might just be a wild dog, which is very very possible. Oh, and the whole starting from the back and eating it's way up is another canis sign. A good way to see if the predator is in the dog family and still in the area is to pile a mound of dirt around were the sheep was killed and check to see if anything defecates on the pile within a few days.
