Does the leather we wear and use come from the same cows we eat?
The other day I was complaining about people wearing exotic fur, when my sister pointed out that I was wearing a suede coat. I reminded her that we actually eat cows and that if we're going to eat an animal, we should try to use as much of the body as possible.
Now, I've actually got myself thinking. Surely we're not killing cows and using the leather and not their meat... are we? Is wearing/using leather doing more damage to cows than the actual consumption of the meat? (And no, sorry, I could never give up meat).
The treatment of exotic animals prior to slaughter for clothing is not necessarily worse than that of cattle and in many cases can be better because care of the animal improves the quality of coat.
Most of the leather from cows is discarded. Just compare the meat consumption to the number of leather coats and shoes.
Check with your local vegetarian or vegan or animal welfare organization. Even better, visit an abattoir.
