How To Get My Dog To Stop Chewing On Things?
I have a maltese-doxine dog, about 10-14 pounds (estimate). He is very energetic and runs around a lot. He chews on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING! The other day, he broke my iPod earbuds and started chewing on them. He rippped my brother's Nintendo DSI charger/adaptor. It could have electricuted him because it was plugged in. He was gnawing at the copper wire. He chews Wii Remotes (The rubber protection cover, not the actual remote). He was chewing on the TV Remote yesterday. And it's not only eletrical devices. He chews on pencils, pen caps, etc. How can I get him to stop chewing things forever?
Whenever he starts chewing on something - stop him and offer him a TREAT or a CHEW STICK - there are big CALCIUM BONES too - or better, get some CHEWABLE TOYS. You should keep all things out of his access for a while - and TRAIN him. dogs always like to please their master. so if he realises you dont like or approve something, he would listen and learn soon.
and oh, by d way, NEVER make the mistake of offering him any REGULAR USE throwaway items - he wont be able to associate the old and the new - and that might pose problem and confusion in future if you do so. Another thing. Take him out for LONG WALKS. that will make him less destructive.
