Do gold plated soldering iron tips work better than chrome plated?
Just wondering since gold doesn't oxidize or does it? hmm.
Some interesting questions.
Gold doesn't for oxides by heating the way other metals do.
Gold oxide is formed by heating AuOH to 200C or Au(OH)3 to 100C.
Gold oxides themselves decompose (by heating?) to form gold metal and oxygen gas.

One factor could certainly be cost.
Another could be a reaction with liquid metals. Gold is attracted to mercury and readily forms a mixture with it. That's probably specific to mercury. Whether the same thing would happen with the molten metals in solder is a question you could add to your list.
The main reason for using chrome or nickel tips is because solder doesn't stick to them.
